Remember when you first learned the alphabet and started putting letters into words? It didn't happen overnight, but the more you did it the better you could read. You learned how to translate the symbols on the paper into sounds that combined into words and phrases.

Reading music is kind of like that. In reading music you translate the symbols on the paper into musical sounds called notes. The symbols on the paper tell you: (1) which note to play, (2) when to play it and (3) how long to hold it. Once you learn those 3 things you are well on your way to be able to read music. The only thing that you will need to do at that point is do it more to get better at it.
