When I went looking for voice lessons in the early 90's, I was lucky enough to find myself in a room with Yury Shenkar. Not having any real knowledge of how to sing correctly, Yury started me on my path to understanding and training my voice to become an active instrument in my day-to-day life. Yury was patient, presenting the lesson material in a thoughtful and concise manner. Yury was also attuned to my progress and was able to alter his message and presentation as my needs required. As my lessons with Yury progressed, I came to look upon him as someone from whom I could get valuable input regarding virtually any musical question. I spend a lot of time playing music; the work I did with Yury helped give me the skills and confidence to make the music I make today.

Michael. After three month of studying vocals with Yury, Michael’s voice sounds much less strained and the resulting vocal sounds effortless. He has more stamina and has learned how to approach notes with his voice so that the result sound easy and natural.Music executives in New York City came to hear Michael and Marisa perform on Sunday and commented that their vocals had improved tremendously since they had heard Michael and Marisa perform last April. I am a soul/blues/rock singer and songwriter based in Western Massachusetts I had the good fortune to study guitar & songwriting early on in my career with Yury Shenkar at the Voice Studio on Mass Ave in Boston in 1996, and studied vocally with fabulous Vocal Coach Jeannie Deva. Yury was a very helpful and encouraging teacher. He was very motivating and a positive teacher with a strong background in theory and song writing. He was able to understand where I was trying to go musically and helped me to blossom and flourish with my songwriting efforts, all the while keeping me very comfortable through the whole process. Now 10 years later I have two studio Cd's out and two live CD's. One of the studio CD's: "Susan Angeletti, Bittersweet" was recorded in Nashville,TN with acclaimed producer Tom Hambridge (Tom has worked with Susan Tedeschi, George Thorogood, etc). I had the chance to tour the east and west coasts with bluesman Johnny Winter, and open for BB King, Wilson Pickett, Ian Anderson, Shemekia Copeland & many other artists. My live Cd: " Susan Angeletti Live, 99 & a 1/2 Won't Do!" was recorded from our opener for BB King which was probably one of the most magical nights of my life. Yury helped give me confidence and the skills to pursue my dreams of making music. So you want to get rockin'?!? Go study with Yury!

After taking a few lessons and working with the exercises I’ve felt a great change in my voice. It wasn’t only me that saw the difference. The producer of my band also saw a huge change. He said that me an our other singer who has also been taking voice lessons here have greatly improved in our sound, breath control, and our vocal control all together. This showed in our recent recording, it went smoothest of all. Instead of taking ridiculous number of takes, as we’ve done in the past, we felt confident in our voices and got it done in THREE takes. This was just from learning the basics; we are already seeing great improvements! It is exciting to me to think of what else is there for me, working on my voice, and finding the sound of my identity.

Since training with Yury Shenkar, I have improved my range by two octaves, learned how to control my voice, and have more strength behind the notes. Although I have only studied under Yury for six months, I have seen improvements and still believe there are improvements to be made. I'm also only seventeen years old and have many years to develop my voice even further. I feel that I have a solid foundation that the education of Berklee could build on.

A teacher knows his student. I am an 8-year old Newton Kid. I have been studying classical piano with Mr. Shenkar for a year. He knows what I need. Very often he breaks down a long piece and guides me through the music, with patience and encouragement. He sometimes plays my left hand music, and makes me understand the music, so I could do better on my own. He is very flexible with time, and he designs a specific course to meet my needs. Mr. Shenkar is my favorite music teacher, and I want to learn guitar and drum with him later. (James R.)
